Two Stories, Opened Up

Tern arrived as a capable 2,500 square foot house buried under twenty years of finishes — carpet in the bedrooms, oak cabinetry in the kitchen, a colonial spindle rail closing off the loft, and bathrooms in lime green, yellow and teal.

The renovation kept the volume and threw out everything else. The great room now runs two stories with a horizontal rail that lets light through instead of blocking it, the kitchen was rebuilt around a soft blue island with a glass tile backsplash, and every bath was taken to the studs. A new bunk room and a full-height tiled walk-in shower were added along the way.
